It's not often that I gasp when I open a cookbook, but I did just that upon opening French Country Cooking: Meals and Moments from a Village in the Vineyards. Whether you like to cook or not, this book by Mimi Thorisson reads more like a novel than a cookbook. Part recipe book, part family chronicle, part a detailed commentary on life in France, this book is a stunner. Mimi Thorisson chronicles her journey of buying a century house and brining it back to life in delicious form. As if engaging text and mouth-watering recipes aren't enough, the photography, by husband Oddur, is outstanding. It, alone, could be a study on how to learn food photography.Handsome and gracious hosts, the Thorissons take you inside their home to share their lives in this superior tome that you are not only going to want to cook from, but also keep close at hand to page through and savor. Once your friends catch a glimpse of it, they'll want to get their own copy to similarly enjoy.The recipes are a tad past the beginner stage, but not so much as to make this a book for experienced cooks only. While not all recipes are hundred percent doable for the American cook (I have no idea, for example, where I would be able to find some black-footed pig chops), this made absolutely no difference to my enjoyment of the cookbook. There is the rare cookbook indeed in which I am able to use every recipe, and this one is no different. It is, however, beautiful, inspiring, full of new recipes, and sprinkled with French phrases throughout that just add to the charm. The Ham Cruque-Madame is both delicious and doable, as is the Ham and Spring Onion Omelette, Kale and Sausage Pasta (I subbed spinach), and. The over-the-top delicious Wise Guy Chicken.The recipe portion of the book is divided into sections: Starters, Main Courses, Sunday Suppers with the Family (I loved this section.), Staff Meals, Side Dishes, and Desserts. As I mentioned before a lot of these recipes are geared toward more experienced cooks, however I honestly think there is something in this book for everyone. While some of the recipes may look daunting, it's largely because the measurements are given in both ounces and grams, and instructions are detailed and concise. Read through each one and I believe you will find all of these recipes are quite doable. One example of this is the recipe for Mashed Potatoes with Fennel. This is easy and delicious, and would make an excellent addition to your Thanksgiving table. Why not mix things up this year if you're hosting an American Thanksgiving celebration and add a French dish or two.If you treat yourself to a special book now and again, this should be the one, it also makes a perfect gift.Disclaimer: I was provided a complimentary copy from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a huge fan of Mimi Thorisson's blog and I also own her first cookbook. I preordered this second one the day I found out about it and after waiting several months finally received it last week. The book, as expected, is gorgeous; the pictures, the writing, the fantasy of the life they live.However, Mimi's books need to be approached as "coffee table cookbooks" rather than everyday cooking books. What I mean is that while they are perfect to look at, not all recipes on her blog or in her books are flawless.Some of the recipes become inaccessible because of the ingredients required (I don't live in a place where I can get dried vines for using as grilling wood, or have foie gras handy in my fridge, or have a butcher who can get me some black-footed pig chops), some of the recipes fall flat because the ingredients in France are often of a higher quality than elsewhere (I tried some of her recipes when I lived in France and they turned out delicious & tried them again back in the US and something just didn't work), and lastly because some of them are just too complicated for an average home cook.Having said that, if you approach this book as a beautiful food journal with some recipes to try and most others to dream of, then you will find yourself super happy!

I have made about 7 things out of this book already and all have come out wonderfully. Yes, not all of the ingredients are readily available. But you'd be surprised how easily it is to google substitutes and still end up with a delicious meal. I don't think this is a book for picky eaters or for timid cooks. And if you're not fond of baking or good at following the recipe to the letter, some of the desserts might be a little advanced. But most of the dinners I've made have taken 30 minutes or less; the rest still clocked in at under an hour.It's a beautiful book both in writing and in photography. And if you're adventurous, in cooking or in eating, I think you'll enjoy the recipes as well.

This is a beautiful book, with recipes that work! I`ve tried about 12 recipes of the author`s 1st book - A Kitchen in France - and had no doubt about purchasing this second one. In June 2017 I tried 30 recipes of this book and we had a blast at home! I think Mimi Thorisson puts not only love into her work but also absolute dedication. There are no mistakes in her recipes, no typos, no editing faux pas. The recipes work, the lists of ingredients are sensible and the dishes turn out absolutely delightful. Be warned that these are 100% French recipes so lots of butter, sugar, flour... All the good stuff! Mimi's books are a joy. The photography is beautiful. I would say they are lifestyle and cooking books....and very inspiring. The food is consistently traditional. I grew up on many of these dishes, and they remain true to form. Her coq au vin is superb, and I have about 20 French cookbooks. I was looking for a great chicken recipe and stumbled upon her blog Manger. The pirate chicken is on constant rotation now, and every dish, however humble or sophisticated, has turned out. The girl can cook. I was a bit worried as many blogger cookbooks seem to be a bit too style focused and less substance. Not so here. This is becoming a favorite.

The styling and the photography is nothing short of gorgeous, but there are recipes I think are only in there because of the beautiful photographs. Pork chops cooked on old grapevine wood, is nothing more than pork, salt, pepper and butter, so if you're all out of grapevines?! the omelette recipe is just that and a stunning photo. If you are looking for a beautiful book, this is most definitely it though. I would give it a 5 for looks and 4 for recipes.
