Review

"[A] rollicking newspaperman's memoir . . . and a strong case for Second City exceptionalism." (New York Times)"A triumph." (Patrick Ryan Toronto Star)“In this wonderful book, Steinberg weaves a poetic mosaic of his life and the life of Chicago—past, present, real, imagined. Like many of its citizens, he came here from elsewhere, drawn by its brawny allure. He lives in Chicago and Chicago lives in him.”—Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)“I grew up in Chicago. And reading You Were Never in Chicago reminds me why I still think of Chicago as home even though I haven’t lived in the city for more than twenty years. Steinberg brilliantly explores the historical and contemporary city and how each of us makes (or loses) our way in it. Whether you're a native or you just arrived at O'Hare, read this book: it will make you feel at home in Chicago. Even better, it will you make Chicago yours.” (Dan Savage)“A lot of people have tried to take the measure of Chicago, capture it between the covers of a book. Many more have failed than have been successful, and that’s easy to understand. Chicago is ever elusive. But this writer and this book get it. If you know Neil Steinberg from his Sun-Times column, and God love you for still reading a newspaper, you will not be unfamiliar with the high quality and distinctive style of his writing. But here you will also find people and places and sentiments that will surprise, enlighten, and entertain you. It is, of course, his own take on the city. And it’s a keeper.” (Rick Kogan)"Despite his long residence in the city and its suburbs, Steinberg feels and writes as an outsider, which allows him to see and describe aspects of Chicago from a fresh and enthusiastic perspective....This is a well-done paean to a diverse, vibrant metropolis." (Booklist)"Like Studs Terkel before him, Steinberg mixes memoir, history, and travelogue in You Were Never in Chicago as he takes readers along on an engaging tour of the characters—and character—of his adopted city, past and present." (Kristin Baird Rattini American Way Magazine)"If you love Chicago, you’ve got to read Neil Steinberg’s new book You Were Never In Chicago. It’s not a guide book. You won’t find a listing of restaurants. It’s not the history of our great city. It’s one man’s perception of this complex, compelling and confounding community we call sweet home Chicago. . . . He has the skill and curiosity of a great writer." (Terri Hemmert XRT)"[O]n display in You Were Never in Chicago, a memoir interwoven with local history just published by the University of Chicago Press . . . is [Neil's] curiosity, insight, amusing self-awareness and enormous talent." (Eric Zorn Chicago Tribune)"Steinberg’s greatest gift is his ability to build Chicago in our imaginations as a city that has grown from the efforts of people willing to make it their home, sometimes against unbelievable odds. He weaves wonderful stories of people we now take for granted – Upton Sinclair, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Carl Sandburg, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Theodore Dreiser, Jelly Roll Morton – all who were not born in Chicago, but for whom Chicago became the backdrop onto which they achieved greatness." (Shyam K. Sriram PopMatters)

Many people associate Al Capone, or Michael Jordan, or the Cubs or da Bears as "typical Chicago." Others think of the snowy, cold winters or our politicians. Of course, there's much more to Chicago than that. As a Chicagoland resident for over 50 years, I love this city and Steinberg's book reminds me of why.The author, a columnist from the Chicago Sun-Times, who moved here from Ohio to go to Northwestern University's journalism school in the late 1970s (in other words, a transplant), has presented a beautifully written collection of stories about Chicago history and Chicago present. What does it mean to be a Chicagoan? Do you have to have been born here? Do you have to live here? As Steinberg shows, both aren't necessary. While those of us who were born here do tend to talk about whether we're North Siders or South Siders and also what parish we were from (I'm a North Sider from St Hyacinth Parish), that's only a part of the Chicago story. As Steinberg clearly shows, you don't have to have been born here to be a Chicagoan.I absolutely loved this book for the stories he tells, especially about old-time Chicago , and for the fact that Steinberg is an exact contemporary of mine. Steinberg is a real throwback kind of guy who appreciates the past and I love that.Even though I live and work in the Chicago suburbs and haven't lived in the city itself in over 40 years, I still think of myself as a Chicagoan. Some co-worker transplants to the city wonder how this could be. I ought to give them this book.

This book appeals, in my estimation, to persons who love to learn more about Chicago history and to persons that like stories with political intrigue and messiness. Steinberg has been a local reporter in the Chicago area all of his adult life and brings many personal stories of his own life and of the lives he's reported on. In this, if one chapter doesn't seem interesting to the reader, no problem, the next will be an entirely different situation. Steinberg portrays himself as a less than likable guy. It's an easy read--good story telling mode as opposed to more heavily-laden-with-history mode.

Living in Chicago I've admired Neil Steinberg's column in the Chicago Sun Times for many years and his daily blog is absolutely unmatched and a must read. His book, You Were Never in Chicago is another example of his skilfull way with words. Neil has a real love/hate relationship with the city, its characters, and its politics You don''t have to live in Chicago to enjoy his prose but I guarantee you'll want to visit it after reading this wonderful bookFred Broitman

Sun Time's columnist's love letter to his adopted city, Neil Steinberg's "You Were Never in Chicago". While telling his story of how he became a Chicagoan he describes interesting views on the city's history and culture. I particularly liked his characterization of those who claim to "be from around here", and a little hinky about his guarded assertion that some of the nepotism and yes, corruption in City and County government can make for efficient and publically beneficial governance. A fun read, informative, and an interesting perspective on "the city that works".

Neil has a wonderful tale to tell about his life and his search for a meaningful career, much of which occurred in Chicago and was influenced by that environment. His take on how we become of the place we live and work in is fair. We become quite subjective when making such judgments, as he suggests. Consequently, I was very comfortable with his assessments of Chicago. I really enjoyed reliving my thirty plus years living and working in the Chicagoland area as I read this book.

I really enjoyed "You Were Never In Chicago". It brought back many memories of growing up and living in Chicago for most of my life. Although, I don't know if I could really be considered a Chicagoan, according to Neil's definition of the term, because I grew up on the South Side and lived for many years in a southwest suburb. Nevertheless, I will always consider myself a Chicagoan and truly love the city. Larry

I love Neils books. I ordered this for someone else as I already have a copy. Guess that tells you how much I enjoyed this book.If you have never been to Chicago you should read it and if you live near or in Chicago you will love it.

For Chicago lovers, this is a treat. Well-written with a life's worth of great, sad, and hilarious stories. Rings true.
