I wish I liked this book. All the elements are there: A plucky protagonist, danger drama, love, war. No luck. Normally, when I get a book for review I feel obligated to finish it. I just couldn't get through "It's What I Do".I have three problems, each cost the book a star. First, amateur writers, especially ones who write an autobiography, have no sense of ebb and flow of tension. The story is mostly told in the manner of , "I did this, and I felt," and so on. Events are not built up to the way a movie writer would handle the story. All events take on the same emotional importance. For instance, the terror of being fire on by Taliban holds no more drama than anger at an editor because he wouldn't run Addario's photo.The second problem comes from the way everything is about Addario. She sees her first famished refugees and the story isn't about them but about how that's the first time she has seen that. Did she have drivers or interpreters? The story doesn't tell us. Who were the everyday people in these places she visited? There are so many opportunities to take us into the location and culture, even the conflicts but the narrative always returns to Addario.My third problem is with this book comes from the author's motivation. At first I though that this was a talented and brave conflict photographer. Okay, anyone who wins a Pulitzer prize is good, so the first part stands up. Brave? I'm not so sure. When Addario finds out that she is pregnant, a condition that supposedly makes her happy, and should cause her to take more care, she seems to hesitate about two minutes over going back into a conflict zone. The warning signs of an adrenaline junky suddenly all jumped out of the narrative. Is she brave or does she just crave the action? Not knowing her I can't tell for certain, but that's when I quit reading.A final point that I didn't take off for is the dearth of photos. It's an autobiography so words are what the book is about so I didn't subtract for the lack. Just saying.
As another reviewer noted, I too did not care much for the worldview or personal problems of the author. If you are interested in reading about the career path of a photojournalist, you might be disapointed, depending on that you are expecting. Just be prepared to read a lot about breaking up and getting back together with her boyfriend.Also, the author is very self-centered. I understand that this is a personal account of events, just don't expect a nuanced view of events as described in the book. Below the part where I stopped reading:From page 81:“Ma’am, could you please not take my picture?†one of the Special Forces asked, making me feel like a paparazzo in Kandahar, something I didn’t think possible. “Ma’am . . . it is for our safety,†he explained as he clenched his weapon and threw out phrases in Pashto (the language of most people in Southern Afghanistan) to the Afghan men around him. I looked at my reflection in his oblong shades and wondered how he could be more worried about his safety than mine— I was an unarmed American woman in Kandahar. I continued to photograph until I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was my colleague, the writer, and his tone was abrasive. He wanted to know if I was finished yet, as if it bothered him I was upsetting the Special Forces. It was strange he would interrupt me in the middle of shooting in such a tense environment; it would never dawn on me to interrupt a writer in the middle of an interview in a similar scenario.
As a former military pilot, I've flown photojournos and network television crews into remote areas where they survived hostile fire. Lynsey Addario's story suggests she would have been aboard one of my missions. Her memoir resonates authenticity through and through. She writes with an impassioned honesty that instills credibility to the stories she shares.I wonder if Lynsey realises the sort of adrenaline rush that empowered a lot of her work. That she can frame a shot, meet editorial demands and recycle to the front line is the sort of routine seen in dramatic mini-series on television screens. But this is no cinematic presentation. This is the story of a combat photojournalist.I currently watch aspiring photographers come through the university programme I teach. It's fair to say that I haven't trained a single student in the past 15 years to wear a flak vest while carrying their DSLR so I doubt any of my students will ever carry Lynsey's camera gear. However, I expect several of my students will discover Lynsey's Life of Love on our library's bookshelf because her written memories are some of the most poignant I have read this century.I'm happy the publisher complemented Lynsey's photography with full colour treatment inside the hard cover book. I wish she had been permitted to run her best shots alongside her storylines but understand how tedious the rights process can be for writers and photographers.More than anything else, I appreciate hearing the perspective of Lynsey Addario resonate from this lovely work. She offers a gripping account of what it takes to remain at the top of your game in the realm of professional journalism. And in her case, it meant staying on the front line of conflicts scattered around the globe.
