Good book with good tips, but doesn't go in depth about guided tours, which I was kinda hoping for. Also, minus one star (and the reason I'm bothering to write a review) is because the cover of this book is a shot of a small portion Vermillion cliffs called The Wave... and this book barely mentions Vermillion cliffs at all, and never mentions the Wave. (The Wave is notoriously hard to visit, so to put it as the cover of their travel guide seems like an odd move!)

We purchased this book for a road trip through the Southwest, and - long story short - while not perfect, it was very useful. The book covers a large region, so I'll share my thoughts broken down state-by-state:The chapter on Utah is the best written and most fleshed-out, with plenty of practical info on the mainstays (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Park City), plus inspiration for seemingly every other corner of the state. After reading, we practically revamped our itinerary so we could do more of the recommended scenic drives and hikes - and it was worth it.Even though Arizona is at least as popular as Utah tourism-wise, strangely the guidebook coverage is not as comprehensive. The must-sees are all covered decently, but there are a few scenic areas they skip out on. Very little specifics on the spectacular Vermilion Cliffs area (such as the Wave, plus other mind-blowing sites accessed by 4WD), only a small blurb on the fantastic Superstition Mountains and surrounding wildernesses, and no mention at all of classic scenic drives like the Apache Trail, Globe to Show Low, or the entire Eastern part of the state (191 through the White Mountains - sadly scorched by wildfire but beautiful nonetheless). A few tips on some of the more crowded places would be nice (no mention of Sedona's Oak Creek Canyon having literally no parking, depending on when you go), or alternative attractions in increasingly overrun Page - there are more slot canyons than just Antelope! - but this chapter seems to lack the "local secrets" that distinguish the best Lonely Planet guides. But as mentioned, what's there is pretty good. The Nevada chapter, while not as in-depth as the rest, at least includes more info than most guidebooks do (which tend to only cover Las Vegas and possibly Reno). It was good for finding lesser known highlights: Great Basin National Park, Cathedral Gorge, and the Elko area were all stupendous.New Mexico also tends to not get much coverage in guidebooks (outside of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and maybe Taos & Carlsbad Caverns), so I really like that this chapter includes tons of sights and activities all around the state, in addition to having some useful recommendations for the more popular locales (The Love Apple, yeah!) & the scoop on the unique local cuisine. It feels in-depth, like the Utah chapter. One thing missing - maybe some tips on where to buy fresh pinon nuts?? Can't wait to go back here someday. The old editions of this guide included a brief chapter on Southwest Colorado, which was useful if you're visiting the Four Corners region, checking out Mesa Verde National Park or Canyon of the Ancients, or taking the scenic Cumbres-Toltec train ride. This version no longer includes that chapter (I'm guessing they want you to buy their separate Colorado guide, which to be fair is a decent one), which means you get about 30 less pages for the same price. I would've loved if they used that space to expand on Arizona more. I also like when guidebooks capture the local flavor and feel of a destination culture-wise, but there's not much of that here aside from New Mexico and the reservations, but maybe that's to be expected... ("what culture?", I can almost hear some locals saying)Overall, this is a very solid choice if you're planning a Southwest road trip and like to get active and off the beaten path once in a while. If you're looking for lots of pictures or background & history, look elsewhere (perhaps the DK Eyewitness Guide). If you're only hitting the major spots like the Grand Canyon or Zion/Bryce Canyon, I'd recommend a book that focuses only on those spots (there are many to choose from - Fodor's, Lonely Planet, and Moon are all pretty reliable as a general guide; check out Falcon Guides for hiking).

I know Lonely Planet wants to sell the Colorado guide by itself, but any mention of the Southwest should include at least parts of Colorado. The content for the other states are typical Lonely Planet and provide a nice overview.

Love Lonely Planet travel books! Very informative and full of helpful tips. I bought this book as a gift, but will also be purchasing one for myself to prepare for our next roadtrip to Az-Utah.

This 544-page book - the 9th (printed) edition of March 2018 - is an interesting and readable guide to the south-western states of the USA. This is a well-designed and presented guide, with useful maps. This is not a glossy guide with lots of colour pictures, but it is a well-designed and laid out guide, with colour used only sparingly, where there is a space to be filled or a section to be highlighted. It is intended to be a meaningful guide to things to see and do, and not just a list of things to see and do.It is broken down into four major sections:Page 6 - Plan Your Trip:This section is an introduction to the south-western states, what to look out for (Top 25), what you need to know in advance, and other important stuff for visitors. On the Road (“The Guide”):P058: Las Vegas & Nevada (with 4 sub-sections)P111: Arizona (8)P234: New Mexico (11)P351: Utah (5)Page 474 - Understand:This section is a guide to local culture, with articles on history, the natural world, cuisine, etc.Page 512 - Survival Guide:This section contains the A-Z Directory, and information on transport, etc; plus -P528: Index

No california in the south west. Major boo boo

This edition seems to have deleted the section on SW Colorado, save Mesa Verde. One more thing: anyone visiting Taos after being away for a decade or so will be severely disappointed. The town has lost much of its charm. Many of the old adobe structures have come down or are in the process of coming down. The highway entrance from the south is particularly stripmalled to death. Sad really.
