If you like witty, whimsical things for grownups, put this book on your shelf. It's a compact and terrific showcase of Val's ability to meaningfully execute an idea while retaining (and artistically wielding) her sense of wonder.The drawings featured throughout the book are funny and poignant, as is the writing that accompanies them. The pages remind me of Liana Finck cartoons or things I see between paragraphs when I read New Yorker articles online. The hex theme resonates with every joke and turn of the page because Val's approach is anything but gimmicky - in fact, the sharply expressed weirdness in her work is wonderful.Val is a great artist because she's a great empathizer and an intentional observer of the human condition. As someone who makes art, I admire her approach to everything she does and I draw inspiration from her constantly.TL;DR for you maniacs on the go: This book is really funny, a breeze to read, and a joy to give/receive as a gift. I gifted it to someone and bought another copy for myself because I know I'll want to page through it more than once. You should copy me.
This is not what I was expecting at a glance. This is more for humor and doesn't discuss the craft of hexes at all. It's almost a picture book of laughable hexes...almost punny if it was what I'd been wanting.
I thought I knew how to hex - I realized how much I could learn... Hexes for the Modern Age introduced me to a host of new and even better curses to wish on people, affecting all different areas of their lives! MUAHAHAHAPlayfully written and illustrated, Hexes is almost less about wishing ill will as it is about expressing the comedic and ironic frustrations experienced in day-to-day life - which of course, can be wished on others... Personal favorites include the realms of Love (or lack thereof) and Hygiene.While some might leave this powerful book of hexes on their coffee table, I find that it's best to keep books of this caliber in the bathroom... You can always tell when they're being read from the laughs coming from behind the door!
This book is a fun, quick read with a bunch of little quirky problems that could happen to any of us, in the guise of hexes. I would have liked a little more detail on them, like suggested ingredients or hand movements to actually cast these.
Super entertaining, exceedingly relatable, funny and witty while avoiding the cheesiness of many attempts at similar works. The illustrations are really what sets this off though, really well done. When you take a step back, you realize that there are absolutely people you would wish each and every one of these upon immediately.
As it happened, our copy of "Hexes for the Modern Age" arrived at a time when the house was full of relatives! "Hexes" provided all of us with delightful, lighthearted supply of fuel for fun conversation. Whether we were putting funny hexes on each other or speculating on hexes placed on us by others not present, it kept the mood free and easy. We love it and hope Val Brains has more in store for us.
These hexes are positively wicked! Only a sorceress of great power and perversion could have put them to paper. I do worry that this Val Brains may be unleashing too much hex for the layman to safely handle. All in all though, 5/5 - my enemies now lie defeated before me, their danger scattered to the winds.
Hexes allowed me to regain control of my life in this modern age. Instead of just wishing ill to befall my enemies, I was able to lay waste to their daily routine with a little practice and a lot of hocus pocus focus. 10/10 would hex again.
