The 17-syllable poem combines two phrases, arranged in three lines; balanced by a pause that presents the picture of a seasonal object as it exists for the poet, the poem demands freshness and a total lack of pretension. To achieve such a response is an ongoing process, suggests Strand, a Zen Buddhist monk, senior editor of Tricycle, and founder of New York Haikukai. I have read quite a few Haiku Manuals. I think this is the best one so far. I found it the most accessible, the easiest to understand, and the one that I most frequently return to for guidance. Strand takes a formal approach to Haiku, the approach taken by most English language Haiku poets. Strand writes, "The place to begin is counting syllables -- five-seven-five." This is so obvious, and yet it is missed by many of the other haiku manuals available. Strand continues, "Because haiku is so subtle, it is necessary to have some definite form. Otherwise, beginners will have no place to start, and experts will soon forget their beginner's mind . . ."The book is divided up into short, topical, chapters. Each chapter illuminates an aspect of haiku composition including seasons, haiku diary, how to read haiku, and broader subjects like faith and tea ceremony. Each chapter is somewhat self-contained and I find that I can go to a chapter and read it on its own. On the other hand, reading from cover to cover there is an overall flow and direction; the chapters are linked to each other and mutually illuminate each other.There is a lot of Zen in the book because the author, at the time of writing, was involved with Zen studies. If you are not a Zen person, this might be a little bit of a hindrance. But Strand acknowledges that one does not have to be a Zen person to compose haiku and the book contains haiku written, for example, by a Catholic Nun, and by others written at open workshops. And the specific suggestions Strand makes for composing haiku, beginning with counting, will be helpful to all, regardless of their spiritual outlook or religious commitments.The book contains numerous haiku, fine examples of the art of 5-7-5. For all those who are intrigued by haiku, but don't know how to begin, this book will be helpful. For all those who have some experience with haiku, this book will be helpful to you as well.
This is a lovely, simple, reassuring book about haiku. It doesn't draw parallels between Zen practice and the writing of haiku; instead, it shows how the practice of haiku is the same as the practice of Zen. Although the author's spiritual tradition is Buddhist, by including many haiku by the Episcopal nun Sister Benedicta, Strand illustrates that the haiku path is not exclusively Buddhist.I particularly enjoyed the "Zen Tea" chapter, where author Strand and a friend poke gentle fun at popular notions about Zen. And in the chapter "Deh Chun," the author talks about his first Zen teacher, whose teachings, he realizes finally, "left nothing out." Strand's own book is just like that. He tells us that haiku is, first, the 5-7-5 syllable pattern. Then, it has a seasonal reference. Finally, its proper subject is the natural world. And ultimately, it is about the present moment.
I have been communicating with Clark for the past month and have decided to ask him to be my teacher. So you understand, I have been writing Haiku for about 30 years and have read all of the classical haiku. Clark suggested his book to me. I had never encountered it before. I very much wish I was aware of the book when it first came out. This was about 13 years ago and it is still relevant. I have read the other reviews, both good and bad, and do not really agree with any of them. Clark suggests that haiku are a spiritual tool and he is right. He does not tell you how to write a haiku. He tells you about the spiritual aspects of haiku writing. There should be no disconnect on any level between myself and the poem on between myself and the event the poem describes. This is haiku mind. Beginners mind in Zen is this same level of connectedness. My hope is that I can always be a beginner and that I can always be engaged.
Author Clark Strand hase skillfully combined his experiences as an English teacher and a Zen Buddhist monk into a book that combines his spiritual journey toward Buddhism with his personal haiku and the haiku of others. The 188-page book is interspersed with lovely black and white photographs. This is another book that I have added to my personal library.
Today I am writing haiku every day just like the ancients who wrote one to describe the significance of each day that came and left.
