The book begins slow and never seems to pick up any momentum. I found the heroine was a secondary character in her own story. The hero never IMHO redeemed himself, even when he finally declares his love of the heroine when in reality it was more a case of he couldn't bear his fiancee and he wanted to be a father; which could have been more of the story and conflict. Why the heroine would accept him beyond her lust for him wasn't really very well developed, she deserved a better hero than Vincent.The real draw back to the story was the antagonist, Leticia. She was cruel, mean and at best a cardboard character. Possibly she had more history in Devon's story but each book should stand alone. I have found I usually enjoy this author but will look forward to the next brothers' stories with caution. Lets just hope it was just an off book. Ms Maclean is too good a storyteller to let one bad book ruin the series.
Well-written, flowing, I could not put it down. I liked the plot. One of my top romance favorites and I have read hundreds of them over the last 30 years many I had forgotten or never finished. It is not easy to find a well-written romance with a worthy plot. Most have either an interesting plot but the writing is flat, boring, repetitive, confusing and not fully exploiting the story ( adding fillers that have nothing to do with the relationship between heroine and hero ) or vice versa, good writing but an uninteresting plot. This book had it all. I loved the hero at the end.
I don't understand the negative comments about the second book. If you liked the first one, you will love the second one. I couldn't put it down except to go to work. I would have read it straight through if I'd had the time. Buy it.
The second book in the Pembroke Palace series grabbed me from the start. The use of excerpts from Cassandra's diary to enhance the story of Cassandra and Vincent works very well. And the stories of the other family members swirl around in the background. By the end of the book I was intrigued and looking forward to the story in the 3rd book. My emotions were engaged in The Mistress Diaries which puts it right at the top of my ratings!
I think that anyone who enjoys reading about a time long ago when woman's rights where not her own will enjoy this book. Making the decision to be happy instead of what society deems proper. Love wins in the end. This books was a quick, easy read.
I chose the five stars because of the sensive. Nature of the book. It was delicately handled. Very. Good characters. Very good explanations. Agood twist. At the end.

I loved how Victors struggle was highlighted and showed his growth and change of heart. Makes you think all is possible no matter how dire the circumstance or how great the rogue! ;)
