About the Author
Rebecca Holland grew up in small town Wisconsin, visiting Chicago a few weekends a year to take in museum exhibits and see the sights. As she got older, Chicago became the place to go for parties, shopping, bachelorette parties, and special occasion dining. Rebecca received her undergraduate degree in Journalism and Languages & Cultures of Asia from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and moved to Washington, DC and then Rome, Italy. Her travels soon took her all over the globe, but Chicago was always in the back of her mind and remained her favorite city to visit. When it came time to move back to the US, there was no choice but Chicago, where she's never felt more at home. She's spent the last few years working as a full-time travel and food writer in the city, where she's always looking for new local shops, exploring every inch of every neighborhood, taking day trips, and eating more food than is probably wise. She firmly believes that Chicago is the greatest food city in the country, and loves showing visitors around. Excellent book. I used to live in Chicago and thought I knew everything. But coming back as a tourist with children is different, so I picked up this book. I’m so glad I did.The information is nicely broken down into areas and the maps are very easy to use.I learned to buy a City Pass for all the attractions and just that information totally shaped our trip.My top take aways from my recent trip:1. Buy a City Pass and do everything you can2. Stay at The Congress on Michigan and you won’t need a car.3. Go to a Cubs game and The Museum of Science and Industry
I took my first trip to Chicago a few months ago. Most of my visit was spent in a conference at The Drake Hotel, but I found a few spare moments to get out and explore this beautiful city. Moon Books gifted me a copy of their Chicago guidebook. It was a huge help in deciding what to do on a free afternoon. The weather was gorgeous so I picked one of the neighborhood walks just north of the hotel (Lincoln Park, Old Town, and Gold Coast). Following suggestions in the book, I saw a bit of the beach, came across lots of public art (statues, murals, etc), strolled through Lincoln Park, the Zoo and Conservatory. One of my favorite spots was the stunning wooden pavilion in Lincoln Park - I might have missed it if not for the suggestion in the book. This book also shares ideas on where to eat, maps to help find it all, and a bit of City history. Best of all it's small enough to tuck into a purse or small day bag. Planning a trip to Chicago? Be sure to pack this book!
