About the Author
Visvaldis George ''Doc'' Nagobads was born in 1921 in Riga, Latvia, where he lived until escaping the Russian invasion in 1944. Before coming to the United States in 1951, he spent seven years in Germany completing his medical studies. While working for the University of Minnesota Medical Services he was asked to serve as team doctor for the university's hockey team, a position he held from 1958 until 1992. During this time Doc was also appointed to serve with thirty different teams, including four Olympic teams, in international competition. Since 1990, Doc has remained active in the drug testing and equipment safety areas of sports medicine and continues to travel at age ninety-three in support of international hockey. Doc was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 and was the first American to receive the Paul Loicq Award from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in 2003.

Good book on the history of international hockey as seen through "Doc's" eyes. The chapters are broken down into competitions the US Team under took when Doc was on the bench. The Doc also provides descriptions of countries and cities the team visited during competitions.
A bit simplistic, but a good quick read. Wished there would have been more personal stories and the game stuff often read as a rehash of the box score.

This is a great book written about a fantastic man. A fascinating read very well written and a compelling story. Doc Nagobads has lived multiple lifetimes all rolled into one. Surviving the horrors of WWII Europe to become one of the most beloved fixtures in both collegiate as well as US Hockey history. He had a firsthand view of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team and is still one of their most treasured memory's of the experience. I had the honor of spending a few days with Doc last fall and immediately fell in love with the man and everything he stands for. Doc is a throwback to the age of gentlemen and a treasure for all time. This book will give you a glimpse of this great man and his lifetime of experiences.
