This review is for the Kindle edition only:The pictures are so small they're not viewable and the text describing the pictures is indiscernible from the rest of the text on the page. I like what I'm reading but these issues take away from the e-book.Please fix these issues!
This is a fantastic book for the beginner and advanced marine reef aquarist, or really anyone who is interested in coral - an organism that devotes 90% of its body to having a mouth. This book details common and uncommon aquarium corals, diseases, infestations, and in many cases gives a short history of the life of coral in the aquarium hobby. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of growing corals or has some already, even if you're advanced enough to frag your own corals without hesitation this book will offer you some insight or knowledge. The pages are thick and heavy weight, the colors are bright and vivid which is invaluable when dealing with something as diverse as coral. It is easy to read, broken into understandable segments, and uses plain language to help out the beginner. This is without a doubt one of the best purchases I have made for my home library of saltwater aquarium books.
The book is more than just a great introduction into coral and other invertebrates. It provides a good jumping off to lace for understanding the structure and physiology of corals. I have the kindle version so don't think much of the pictures. It is also not a good choice if you want the simplified version. It covers a number of coral topics in detail. If I only had one book on corals (hint, I have a few) this would be it.
This book is a must-have for anyone truly interested in keeping domestic corals and their kin. It is a steal for the price, and filled with excellent images. It contains superior taxonomic and nomenclature information, making it easy to understand which animals belong in which genus. It helped me identify many of my hitch-hikers. It includes toxicology of the animals, including their threat level to aquarists and other animals. Vivid diagrams on octocoral and stony coral anatomy (and words in bold print) make it a bit like a text book. One of the best aspects of Aquarium Corals is its universal appeal. Those new to the hobby will find as much joy as experts. Charts help beginners learn orders, suborders, and families. Collection impact, symbiotic algae species listings, and natural location keeps advanced aquarists interested. This book even has a map with all common collection sites and recipes for making coral food! The bulk of the book focuses on the various species of cnidarians, but also provides an excellent brief history of coral classification and research. There is an in-depth discussion of diseases as well. True to form, it provides a wealth of information about nitrogen cycles and common filtration practices, temperature and salinity, and the various trace elements, plus conservation threats and efforts. The real treat is the corals, however. It's a great book. Buy it; you'll like it!
Do not buy kindle version, pictures are useless
Probably a good reference for a doctoral thesis on corals. Consider the following:"Telesto Lamouroux, 1812: Polyps retractile into anthosteles and without mesogleal intrusion tissue. Simple unlayered stolons without fused sclerites. Axial polyps have a single ring of solenia. Telesto fruticulosa (orange telesto) is found in varied hard substrates in the tropical western Atlantic. Telesto sanguinea (red telesto) is a bright red deep-water Atlantic species."The whole book is like that. Even the pictures are unhelpful - 1 inch square (at least in the Kindle version), blurry, drab, and usually either a picture of a huge coral in the wild or a close-up of some indiduval feature.
This is an awesome book but someone who has been studying corals for decades. However speaking as a hobbyist who just wants to know how to keep them alive, this book was way more than I will ever need. If you are interested in getting your PHd in coral taxonomy than this book is for you. However for most of us, it is overkill. Well written, up to date info, knowledgeable author but if you can only afford 1 or 2 books on coral keeping look elsewhere.
I guess the fact that this book, at the time of this review, has received nothing but 5 star reviews-says it all. Easy to read and completely understandable, with loads of pictures to show you just what the author is talking about. What I liked most about the book was the author's honesty throughout. He clearly says which corals will most likely live and which ones will usually die in our tank. And never seems to be 'selling' a product or idea as so many other books in this industry do. The section of husbandry is worth the price of the book itself. No where else have I found more complete guide to increasing my coral population without spending mega-bucks on new specimens. The corals in my reef tanks have never looked better, and are growing like weeds. I've even been teaching the owner of the local fish store a thing or two about the corals they sell.
