I am a much older adult who took piano lessons for about six months when I was younger adult, I missed the piano. I now have my mother's piano that I can learn to play again. I love this "Teach Yourself To Play Piano," by Alfred. I have been learning to play as I go, a few minutes here and few minutes there and sometimes longer sessions. I needed lots of learning! I do not know the notes on a sheet of music, I needed something basic but not too basic to bore me to death.The book is for "Beginners of All Ages." It progresses slowly with simple lessons learning the right hand, then the left hand and slowly adds the chords one note at at time. And before you know it, you are playing music when both hands. I have only been practicing for about a week or so, it takes practice! Learning to play the piano is not easy, but with practice you can do it. I find myself practicing more on the piano with this book more just because I am making progress and I like what I hear!I am learning to count the notes to keep the beat, I start out very slowly and repeat lessons frequently until learned. And, I jump around in the lessons, going back to easier lessons and then progressing again. I am doing simple scales to get my weak fingers some exercise. I am still trying to coordinate both hands in playing the simple "C" scale.Almost bought a metronome! I found an App for my telephone! It was free! A metronome ticks out the beats to keep you moving along as you are playing a song, so it sounds right. I am already looking to see what else this teaching series offers, I love the way he teaches. I am on page 37 and making progress, the more you practice the better you become.In the beginning of the book, you will find notes that are numbered and marked with the notes.I also bought a paper sheet that can be put behind the keys to let you know the keys. I rarely use it, but when a song does not sound right, I make sure I check the chart to make sure I am playing the correct notes, most often I am playing the wrong note. So, the paper chart helps a lot.Devote your time to learning the play the piano, you can do it!
I am an adult beginner and this set really helps. The book is nice because you can read it at your own time and pace, with the dvd, it helps to actually watch it in action. The instructions on the DVD is a bit fast for me but I can always pause it so reading the book before you watch the DVD will help you to understand what the instructor is showing you tremendously. This is a great basic piano learning course all in itself. You can go a long way with this course. It has a book that is 96 pages in length and which encompasses what the earlier formats used to do in 2 or 3 books of about 45 pages. But this course also has the DVD which has the instructor sitting at a piano showing you and explaining to you everything as she teaches you to play the piano. Her video correlates very closely with the 96 page book and is about 2 hours in length. If you just kept going over this material, the video and the book, that is, I think it wouldn't take you many reiterations before you begin to feel like you're ready to move on to more sophicated coursework and materials. THIS COURSE IT WELL WORTH THE MONEY YOU SPEND FOR IT. I THINK IT WAS LIKE 20 BUCKS OR A LITTLE MORE, BUT WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT. You could spend tons of money with a personal tutor and not get much further along than with using this coursework alone on your computer. In my case, I'm using my keyboard and playing along while I watch the video on the computer screen next to my keyboard. I pause the video as often as I need to and practice what the teacher is showing me several times before moving on in the video. However, I did preview the entire 2 hour video first before doing anything as far as practice goes.
I had tried about 30 years ago to learn to play the piano, but failed miserably.I'm not even sure why I tried again, but decided to see if this book could help. IT WAS AMAZING. It may seem daunting at first, but stick to the lesson, practice the exercises and next thing you know, you'll be playing! By the end of the book, you'll be playing some impressive pieces.I've been able to take what I have learned from this book and applied it to standard sheet music since I finally now know how to read music. Because of the foundation this book gave me, I've been able to learn and play advanced music.
I am really learning to play piano using this book! Of course, it's not magical; you still have to put in the time and practice a lot, but the book guides you from one simple lesson to another in a very user-friendly way. In the beginning the notes have numbers above them to tell you which finger to use. In this way it very gently teaches you to read the music and find the keys on the keyboard. The numbers start to disappear at just the right time so that you don't even really notice that they have gone. It also features very well-known tunes so that it's easy for a beginner to spot a missed note. I would recommend this book to anyone who was truly motivated to learn and willing to put in the practice time.
