I'm on the fence with this one. While I enjoyed the few "main characters" the book had, everything else was touch and go.So many things bothered me in this book:There is no way someone can go to DMV withought any kind of indentification or money and get a new license. Especially if they moved out of state. We don't really know as there is no names of ANYTHING. Just town and city for crying out loud!A lawyer would not invest hours of her time on that case she was working on! There was literally no information from their client and the time line was so unclear that it looked like they'd been working months on it before doing a standard background check.There were so many side characters and so many nicknames for r people my head was spinning trying to keep track. It's quite obvious that this is a spinoff series, although I don't believe I knew that going in based on the description. The author really needs to work on that. It's too confusing, and I'm not going back to read about the he other characters when I already know what happened to EVERYONE!We were what, half way through when it became clear it was some kind of mystery. Didn't know that going in. I love myself a good who done it, but the bad guy was apparent fairly early on.If any small town had not one but two murders the chief would be checking out why they hadn't gotten ANY Results back from the 'city' lab. He wouldn't be letting a deputy take care of everything!There were just too many flaws in the book. I liked Alex and Juliette, although they were a tad weird. The dog was great. I actually was hoping for Juliette and Oz to hook up. I liked him better than Alex. Seemed like Alex had multiple personalities the way he acted and with her naming each one it was odd.I did like that the author had each chapter labeled so you knew which character's POV it was. That is super helpfu. I hate when authors mash it altogether and you have no idea who's POV it is.All in all it wasn't a total waste of my time, just wish their was some more research done.
"Because of You" is an excellent romantic suspense with good twists, quirky small town, mysteries left and right, plus two main characters with a good meetcute and some serendipity.Alex, the town police chief, lives a simple and single life. The town is small and charming, and most crimes are simple if the perps just get their punishment, but the darn lawyers help them get off with just a slap on their wrists... Things started to go askew when Juliette came to town. She's also hiding a big secret. She's choosing to hang her lawyer shingles in his town, helping the existing lawyer (who's already past 70) retire. They should have been enemies, except Alex rescued Juliette from a car wreck moments before she pulled into town. And there's a connection between them. But they can't indulge, when the town found its first murder victim in years... then a second... a serial killer is stalking this town, and why are they all blue-eyed blonde that looks like Juliette?!The beginning of the book started with the car accident that had Alex rescue Juliette, only to have Alex found out later she's the new lawyer in town, and even more secrets. The tensions escalated very nicely, The serial killer came even later... All in all, nice romantic thriller.
This book was so hard for me to rate, because parts I really liked and some others not so much.Likes- Interesting main characters, people who are not your norm. Loyal, honest people with quirky personalities. A good community of caring people. Britt who is Alex's sister. Alex's best friend Oz and co-worker added some funny moments. And that is something else that I liked there were quite a few smile worthy times in the book. Some of the conversations between Juliette and Alex were really funny.Also, an unexpected murder mystery going on and it does get resolved.A H.E.A. is always nice too.Alex's "ugly" dog, Bowser. The nicknames that different people call Alex. The "X" was kind of cute. Some other people called him "deputy" just to rile him in a sassy but goodnatured way. It was kind of different that Juliette gave Alex different nicknames for the different kinds of personality sides showed up. Like: Grumpy Alex, Shy Alex, Weirdo Alex" just to mention a few.Dislikes- Too MANY people introduced, that at times had my head spinning. I had a hard time keeping them straight. Just a bit too much sex talk and actions. There were some times when some of the talk was kind of cheesy.
Wonderful, vivid characters, even though I'm still trying to figure out all the relatives. Loved the feisty main characters, but I especially loved Oz. He made the story, and I laughed at his antics throughout. The story is good , well defined, strong characters, hilarious antics and dialogue, hot sex, and sweet romance. Not much else you could want.
Because of You was my first read by Emilia Finn, and I’m just gonna say it…I’m hooked. The characters were so real, so fleshed out, that I easily fell into their world and cared about what happened to them. I adored Juliette (with an extra T and E at the end!) and found it really easy to connect with her. Finn writes feelings and emotions so beautifully, which means I felt ALL THE FEELS while reading this book. The opening scene practically explodes off the page right off the bat, and as I read on I was happy to find excitement and mystery and humor woven in with this beautiful (and hot!) love story. And speaking of love…Juliette and Alex? What can I say… My cynical heart beat wildly for these two. And can I just say that I also fell a little bit in love with Oz? *sigh* So you see? That right there. THAT’S the thing. Finn makes you feel for ALL of her characters. This fictional world was so real that my own reality faded completely while reading this book. And the best part? This is only the first book in the series…I’m definitely looking forward to devouring the rest!
