Review

“ If you’ve ever felt that gaps exist between ‘traditional’ software development using Scrum and video game development using Scrum, this book is for you. Clinton effectively bridges those gaps by covering the adjustments necessary for disciplines, individual roles, and processes and project phases unique to game development, thoroughly supporting it with explicit examples and practical advice. Simply put, a must-read for game developers that are currently using or plan to implement Scrum or other agile processes within their company.” —Jeff Lindsey, Producer, Longtail Studios   “ I wish Clinton Keith could go back and write this book 15 years ago—it would have helped me see things a lot differently. Agile Game Development with SCRUM is a one stop shop for game teams interested in using scrum techniques.” —CJ Connoy, Game Producer, Treyarch   “ By the time you wake up and realize that you really need this book, your project will probably be too far gone. Dive into agile before it’s too late and let Clinton be your guide. Tested under the fires of true game production, everyone involved in game development will gain from reading Clinton’s wisdom.” —Jason Della Rocca, Founder, Perimeter Partners, and former Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association   “ Clinton Keith has written an excellent book for both practitioners and students. He combines an in-depth analysis of the challenges of large scale game development with hands-on advice on the use of Scrum. His often funny anecdotes illustrate that this guy has really experienced the heat of large computer games projects.” —Bendik Bygstad, Professor of Information Systems, The Norwegian School of IT   “ Clinton Keith combines his experience as both video game developer and agile practitioner to apply Scrum philosophy to the unique challenges of video game development. Clint clearly explains the philosophy behind Scrum, going beyond theory and sharing his experiences and stories about its successful application at living, breathing development studios.” —Erik Theisz, Senior Producer, 38 Studios   “ Clinton has combined his extensive game and software development experiences with agile methodologies. After reading many books on Scrum and then reading this one to see how Scrum could be applied in the gaming industry, I wish I would have read this book first. It contains great information for challenging areas of Scrum such as scaling it to large teams. There are many great info-graphics and the material isn't dry or dull in any way.Everyone in the gaming industry should be reading this book, period. Moreover, it is still relevant even for projects outside of games and that says a lot.

Really clear and concise breakdown of agile development in games. Hit marks on a lot of examples, including the benefits and potential pitfalls. I have been a software engineer for 4 years, and I definitely learned a lot, and it has a lot to offer those of any discipline really going into game industry.

I've been doing a fair amount of reading on Agile lately, and I can say that this is the best Agile development book I've come across. In addition to an interesting introduction to Scum and Agile and its history in the gaming industry, the author describes and provides insight into many of the challenges that all Agile implementations face. Most of these lessons can be generalized to industries other than the game industry, such as scaling up to large projects, working with multiple disciplines with differing different cadences, involving QA, and selling Agile to executives. He also provides a realistic appraisal of Agile and Scrum, describing its pros and cons, rather than presenting Scrum as a silver bullet as many texts on the subject do.I found this book clearly demonstrated how the principles of Agile are put into practice, with real experiences and sound advice. While I'm not a game developer myself it has helped me understand Scrum and Agile in general, and I recommend it to coworkers also working in IT.

Decent read, similar to other Agile game books though this would be my recommendation at this time for anyone looking to better understand or improve processes using scrum

Valuable guidance in utilizing Scrum for developing games.

Author certainly knows Agile/Scrum. The examples from the game industry keep it interesting and grounded in practicality.

From my limited experience with both Agile and game development in General, this book provided an excellent entry point on the road to becoming an Agile developer.I enjoyed the anecdotal "experience" sections the most. Being able to read about real life scenarios within a studio, and how Agile was applied, was educational and supplied a huge amount of context.

Very interesting book with a lot of good practices for Agile implementation in your team!

Watching the new Project Blue Book series on History Channel, I wanted to do some more reading on the subject. This book started out interesting with some good info on the Blue Book origins and Hynek, but then evolved into nothing more than reprints of dozens of government documents and reports, many of them repetitious accounts of the same incident from multiple eyewitnesses who mostly say the same thing over and over again in different words. There is no insight or analysis offered on any of the incidents, nor comments or stories on the attempts at cover-ups or ludicrous government "explanations." I assume it's presented this way so the reader can draw their own conclusions, but it makes for VERY dry reading with no storytelling aspect whatsoever. I'm a fan of UFO reading material, and I rarely stop reading a book part-way through, but I could not get through this entire book. It just bored me to death. Not recommended unless you just want to read a lot of early government UFO reports and dry eyewitness testimony. It could have been so much more.

I found the book to have several chapters of interest but the rest is just document after document.

Great classic book. However, there are errors in the Foreward. More care should have been taken in checking grammar and spelling.

I really enjoyed all the information contained in this book about some UFO sightings, and the reports verbatim about their investigations. I recommend this book to all who like to read about UFOs.

Find it very interesting to read!

Haven’t read book yet. Watching series on tv first

Loved it

Love all of the information in this book. An eye opener.

Jerry Siegel was different from most of the other kids in Glenville. While they were playing ball in the street, shooting hoops at the community center, or shopping on 105th Street, Jerry was holed up in the attic with his precious zines. He also loved to take in the movies at the Crown Theater, just a couple blocks from his house, or at the red- carpeted and balconied Uptown Theatre farther up 105th. Scrunched in his seat with a sack of popcorn in his lap and his eyes fixed on the screen, he marveled as the dashing actor Douglas Fairbanks donned a black cape and mask to become the leaping, lunging, sword-wielding Zorro. Jerry admired Fairbanks and all the other leading men—those strong, fearless, valiant he-man characters who took care of the bad guys and took care of the gorgeous women too. Jerry worshipped Clark Gable and Kent Taylor, whose names he would later combine to form Clark Kent.   Jerry usually sat in darkened theaters alone as he absorbed stories, tracked dialogue, and marveled at the characters. After the movies he would walk to the newsstands on St. Claire Avenue to pick up a pulp-fiction novel or a zine. Soaking in every line of narrative and dialogue, he would read the books and magazines cover to cover—then read them again. Turning to his secondhand typewriter, he would dash off letters to the editors, critiquing the stories and suggesting themes for future editions. He would scour the classified sections for the names and addresses of other science fiction fans and send them letters in which he shared his ideas for stories, plots, and characters. For kids like Jerry, science fiction provided a community—a network of fans bound together by a common passion.   One of Jerry’s favorite books was Philip Wylie’s Gladiator. Initially published in 1930, it was the first science fiction novel to introduce a character with superhuman powers. Jerry moved through the swollen river of words like an Olympian swimmer, devouring the description of the protagonist, Hugo Danner, whose bones and skin were so dense that he was more like steel than flesh, with the strength to hurl giant boulders, the speed to outrun trains, and the leaping ability of a grasshopper. Danner’s life is a tortured pursuit of the question of whether to use his powers for good or evil. That made Jerry think about how hard it was to choose right over wrong.   Then there was that unforgettable image of the flying man—the one he had seen on the cover of Amazing Stories. Jerry would hang on to that image for the rest of his life. The flying man, clad in a tight red outfit and wearing a leather pilot’s helmet, soared through the sunny sky and smiled down on a futuristic village filled with technological marvels. From the ground, a pretty, smiling girl waved a handkerchief at the airborne man and marveled at his fantastic abilities. In this edition of Amazing Stories Jerry saw a thrilling new world of scientific advances and social harmony— a perfect green and sunny utopia to be ushered in by creative geniuses with more brains than brawn, more natural imagination than school-injected facts, more good ideas than good looks. Jerry wanted to help create that utopia. Luckily, he had a partner in his quest.

I liked this book a lot. The reading level is clearly at a youth level, but not childlike. I read it both for my own sake and as a grandparent. I learned a lot of history type information about the creators of Superman as well as the history of the KKK. It dawned on me I did not really know a lot about the actual history of the KKK.In regard to resisting the KKK, I had heard of Stetson Kennedy. It now seems my knowledge of him was slightly inaccurate and exaggerated. However I am quite sure he did a lot of good.I feel discussing a matter like the KKK without any racial terminology would be difficult. It is possible that certain terminology SHOULD be used so the issues can be clearly understood. Nonetheless I personally would not want a child to read this without parental input. My own children are now grown. I can still vividly recall one of my children watching a major network news show when a discussion of the "N - word" came on and the actual word was used. My child was in early grade school. She turned to me and asked me about the specific word. It was clear to me she had NEVER heard the word anywhere and that made me happy. That contrasted with my own experience as a child in the 1950's. Clearly the word was not being used at school or on the playground. But it was still a sobering experience for me and I was glad I was there to try to answer questions. I remember President Obama saying he thinks every generation gets better about this subject and I agree with him about that.Additionally there is a brief passage about a sub group in the KKK that engaged in a specific and gruesome type of physical torture. Parents should be aware of that. I refer to a brief narrative about corkscrews. There was also a passing discussion about Wonder Woman. According to this work, Wonder Woman, in addition to entertainment, spoke to females about domestic violence. I did not know that and it never dawned on me that Wonder Woman could be used to facilitate such discussion. I appreciate knowing that.

I found this a very readable, fascinating account of the creation of Superman and how this fictional superhero was used to fight the Ku Klux Klan. I've heard the story of Superman's creation before but not in as complete a fashion as is explained here. It's an interesting story about two Jewish teenagers growing up during the Great Depression who desperately wanted to join the comics industry. But neither could ever imagine their creation becoming the phenomenon it did. Unfortunately for them, they turned the copyright over to DC Comics (normal procedure at the time) and as a result didn't receive the benefits they should have. But Superman has throughout his history provided not only entertainment but the idea that good can defeat evil, even the real thing. The Ku Klux Klan may not have started out as an organization of evil but it certainly became one. What I didn't know was that it petered out after their extreme acts of violence got out of control. Reading about the deliberate reincarnation of the organization was a bit sickening, but ironically it seems that the people responsible for its recreation were more interested in money than ideology. Unfortunately, many of those who joined the organization did fully buy into the hate and fear that the organization encouraged and often acted on it, violently.Seeing these two stories come full circle when the Superman radio show decided to have Superman face an organization that clearly represented the KKK. This book represents the impact that even a fictional character can have on the history of a nation. The power of propaganda for good or evil can easily be seen in this story, a story that happens to be true. A great example of the kind of history book that children will want to pick up and read. There is however a lot of text here, more photos and extras would have been nice. But the story is compelling enough to make up for that, but reluctant readers will be put off by the amount of text. A great read though for more advanced readers.

The 1915 revival of the Klan was as much a business enterprise as it was one of hate. It’s sickning to think that as a non-profit shouldn’t be allowed to promote hatered. 80% of the KKK’s revenue went to a PR firm in Atlanta. And that is just in section 2. There is so much more. A very interesting book that weaves the history of the US,, the KKK, Superman, and WWII into a very interesting narative. They helped create many childrens programming techniques that we take for granted today.Well worth reading — easy to read.

While this book deals in a swift, readable, delightful style with this one very meaningful intersection of contemporary history and popular culture, it also tells us a lot about the history of the Ku Klux Klan and the character of Superman--why both came into being, how they evolved over time, and why both are still relevant today. And it also makes you love and appreciate the Man of Steel even more.

I like Helen B's review. I think the "sobriety" we feel when reading about the Klan was a little much for my 11-year-old, who didn't finish the book. I thought it was great and hope he will re-evaluate it as a teenager.

Actually entertaining and interesting to read! Would recommend to any age group that's interested in either comics or the downfall of the kkk in America.

The Last Place on Earth: Scott and Amundsen's Race to the South Pole, Revised and Updated (Modern Library Exploration), by Roland Huntford

Amazon.com Review

On December 14, 1911, the classical age of polar exploration ended when Norway's Roald Amundsen conquered the South Pole. His competitor for the prize, Britain's Robert Scott, arrived one month later--but died on the return with four of his men only 11 miles from their next cache of supplies. But it was Scott, ironically, who became the legend, Britain's heroic failure, "a monument to sheer ambition and bull-headed persistence. His achievement was to perpetuate the romantic myth of the explorer as martyr, and ... to glorify suffering and self-sacrifice as ends in themselves." The world promptly forgot about Amundsen. Biographer Ronald Huntford's attempt to restore Amundsen to glory, first published in 1979 under the title Scott and Amundsen, has been thawed as part of the Modern Library Exploration series, captained by Jon Krakauer (of Into Thin Air fame). The Last Place on Earth is a complex and fascinating account of the race for this last great terrestrial goal, and it's pointedly geared toward demythologizing Scott. Though this was the age of the amateur explorer, Amundsen was a professional: he left little to chance, apprenticed with Eskimos, and obsessed over every detail. While Scott clung fast to the British rule of "No skis, no dogs," Amundsen understood that both were vital to survival, and they clearly won him the Pole. Amundsen in Huntford's view is the "last great Viking" and Scott his bungling opposite: "stupid ... recklessly incompetent," and irresponsible in the extreme--failings that cost him and his teammates their lives. Yet for all of Scott's real or exaggerated faults, he understood far better than Amundsen the power of a well-crafted sentence. Scott's diaries were recovered and widely published, and if the world insisted on lionizing Scott, it was partly because he told a better story. Huntford's bias aside, it's clear that both Scott and Amundsen were valiant and deeply flawed. "Scott ... had set out to be an heroic example. Amundsen merely wanted to be first at the pole. Both had their prayers answered." --Svenja Soldovieri

Very excellent look at the personalities of two polar explorers, their journeys, and their fateful competition finally to reach the South Pole. I was fascinated by the differences between these two people, Amundsen and Scott. Amundsen was methodical to an extreme. He learned about every aspect of polar travel, through visits with explorers, volunteering on expeditions, reading, and direct training about skiing, running dogs, nutition, sailing into polar waters, etc. etc. He was conpulsive about understanding everything possible about everything that might have an impact on an expedition. Amundsen also valued the knowledge of indigenous people about traveling in polar regions, food, clothing, etc. He didn't see them as savages with nothing to teach. Scott was haphazard and careless in his approach. He took the attitude that a large and well-funded team could wing it and overcome problems as they occurred. He didn't value the knowledge of indigenous people who had lived in the Arctic for eons. He took ponies to the Antarctic as pack animals. He hated sled dogs. What is there for a pony to eat in the pack ice? Nothing. What can a dog eat? Seals. Penguins. In the worst case even another dog. The author also discusses the more general differences between Norwegians and the English as regards exploration and even behavior toward subordinates.

This book launched me onto a 3 month reading project of other books related to the subject matter, including books about Laurence Oates and I especially enjoyed Cherry-Gerard's very comprehensive work The Worst journey in the World, and finally Captain Scott by Fiennes, which debunks much of the misinformation presented by Huntford, generally without true references. You will get a different perspective on both R.F. Scott and E. A. Wilson from these other books , and, it's helpful to get beyond Huntford's compulsively negative rendition. I gave this book five stars initially, and it is very well-written, but I have come full-circle and see it as too biased against the English Expedition personnel. I found that Fiennes book is especially good at giving the whole picture including both good and bad sides of the all of the main characters. Fiennes carefully picks apart every one of Huntford's mis-statements. This book presents a negative bias toward Captain R. F. Scott. This is not to deny that Scott make technical errors or lapses of judgement which undoubtedly contributed to the Expedition's failure, like foot wear not up to the task, and insisting on man hauling, and failure to remember from 1902-03 that paraffin (kerosene) typically had faulty valves which leaks the contents to atmosphere in very cold temperatures. Because paraffin cans were red, the polar team placed them atop the cairns to over-winter, guaranteeing that they'd be empty a year later, when badly needed. But you can't blame the extended cold periods with colder than normal temperatures on Captain Scott. And even with food and fuel, those poor three who died in the tent had feet which had failed completely. You just can't walk around a high plateau with wet of freezing feet, for months at a time....Antarctica is not a forgiving place and technical mistakes become fatal mistakes.

Having read a number of works that neglect to properly analyze the bungling of Robert F Scott, and some that attempt to persuade the reader that Scott was primarily interested in Science, and only secondarily in attaining the pole first, this book is a breath of fresh air that truly examines, compares, and contrasts the two expeditions. The great irony is that Amundsen was so over-prepared already that he could have afforded to "do science" also. However, he never pretended that the pole was secondary to science. Had he intended on science, he would have had even more provisions and preparations for the mission. Scott was trying to win the pole and make scientific observations while being poorly prepared for either aspect. Amundsen planned the finest details with years of preparation and with double and triple redundancy in provisions and equipment. Scott arrived at the barrier without understanding, or being trained for, dogs, skis, optimal clothing, or anything else that mattered. If hauling sleds was his backup plan, then he was completely underprepared for even that. He was doomed before he ever set sail.Scott was such a bungler that I would go so far as to say that his name does not belong along with Amundsen's at the South Pole station.

When this book first came out close to 30 years ago it was such an inspiration to me that it prompted my two lengthy expedition trips to the Antarctic.I've used this book as a lesson in leadership to young people attending high school and even college (it was required reading in a leadership class that one of my students just took over the summer at Cornell University). The difference in leadership styles demonstrated here between Scott and Amundsen is night and day and it's clear that this is one of the main reasons why Amundsen reached the South Pole 34 days ahead of Scott and why he was able to live out his life basking in the glory of his accomplishments while Scott and his team relied on Scott's wife to try to drum up support for her husband's tragic end succumbing to the cold just 11 miles from a supply depot.Reading the book was great but "reading" it again through the CDs while driving was very enjoyable. There were numerous times when I arrived home and sat in the driveway listening to another chapter before heading into the house.

I had this book for several years before I loaned to a dance teacher and she never returned it. I have since purchased another and I hope that she enjoyed it as much as I did.

This is a good book but not the history of tap dancers throughout film history I was hoping for. It's made up of interviews most of which are fascinating.

Ladies, if you really pay attention and follow the rules in this book conservatively and you have very consistent cycles, then this will work for you. I've been using this method for over a year with no scares. But I use the method very conservatively.Pros:No more messing with your hormones or devices or irritants. You know exactly what's going on with your fertility. You can see if you have a thyroid problem (temps in the 96's or lower range). You will be able to time things for a girl or boy with a good degree of accuracy. You can tell if you in fact did get pregnant.Cons:You'll have less opportunities for intimacy, especially if you follow the rules very conservatively.Intimacy during the safest times will be the times you are least interested (interest is highest during peak fertility). It will take some getting used to.

All I can say is, I wish I had known about this book before I went on pills and the mirena (seriously, f— the mirena IUD; it makes women feel crazy, google it). I love that I can practice natural, SCIENTIFIC, completely non-invasive birth control. I love that it's free and I'm not paying any huge drug companies, with their total lack of ethics. I've been sending every woman I know with birth control issues in the direction of this book.I think the best part about it is honestly just understanding my body and feeling totally in control of the pregnancy risk. Cannot recommend this book enough for any person with ovaries who is or may be in a relationship with a person with testes.

When I got married in my mid 30's, one of my co-workers recommended this book in case we decided to have kids. She told me, "I hope this isn't TMI, but this book helped me get pregnant on the first try when I was your age."So, a year later, when we were planning to try, I bought this book and read it like it was biology homework. I found it really interesting and started charting my cycles. I was surprised to discover that I had normal symptoms of ovulation, despite my cycles being extra-long since I was a teenager. That alone was encouraging.Well, we tried, and I was pregnant on the first cycle of trying. I realize that this is not the case for everyone, but I really feel that the information in this book helped me. I'm also glad to know more about my personal reproductive cycle beyond just knowing when my last period was. There is so much good information for women to know about their bodies, whether we're trying to get pregnant or not. For example, the information about traditional due date tables vs. calculating due date by last ovulation was empowering. My ultrasounds have confirmed the date I conceived, which was 20 days into my cycle (this matched my chart), not the traditional 14 they normally go by.Due to this edition having come out in 2006, some of the information is outdated. There was a recent study that the methods described for determining the sex of your baby (which the author points out herself only improve your chances for conceiving a child of the sex you want by a very small percentage) don't bear out statistically at all. Also, the charting software (disc) included with the book is outdated and likely won't run on your computer. I also think the author could have gone farther in emphasizing the importance of starting pre-natal vitamins before trying to to conceive. She does mention it, but this is a pretty important step to take and it's mentioned on only briefly in passing.Anyway, this book is well worth a read, and overall I found it very encouraging. I plan on recommending it to any of my friends who are thinking of having babies.

So much wonderful information! I've been off my birth control for almost a year and have felt incredible. My senses are more vivid, I have more interest in my partner and I no longer have anxiety over a late period. I've learned so much about MY body and its habits. I encourage every woman to read up and learn YOUR body not the one the doctors tell you your should be like. I paired this information with an app called Kindara and track my cycles every month. I'm usually pretty good about taking my temperature but after a couple months, I can note my other body signals and determine ovulation on my own.

I am SO happy I took the time to read this book and to truly understand its concepts. Yes, it was very time consuming for me because I read certain chapters at least a dozen times, but that's because I was absolutely clueless about my menstrual cycle, anatomy, etc. You don't have to read every single chapter, just read what applies to you. For example, if you want to use it for birth control, just go to that section. If you want to know how to get pregnant, just go to that chapter.Yes, at first it can be overwhelming, but once you understand it and you chart for a month or two, you realize, the author is right, there are so many shortcuts...and it all becomes so easy! It's all a matter of: taking your morning temperature several days a month and also analyzing your vaginal discharge. You can also check your cervix but I don't bother with that. Analyzing your discharge has never been so interesting and fun! It never occured me to me that there are different types of discharge, I didn't realize that it actually had a meaning! I just went to the bathroom and had all this slippery, stretchy discharge coming out. It was so much that even the toilet paper was soaked. From analyzing my discharge the past few days, I KNOW that today I am ovulating and that tomorrow my temperature will go up. It's really great to KNOW YOUR BODY, what it's doing and WHY.I feel a new sense of confidence because I finally understand my body! I am so thrilled that I no longer have to take cancer causing birth control just to prevent pregnancy. Also, I'm so glad I can enjoy sex again!! Birth control completely killed my libido. My only criticism of the book is--it suggests you do Kegel exercises AS you urinate. But stopping the flow of urine can cause urinary tract infections.I SO look forward to passing this onto my daughter.
